When it comes to skin aging, although the skin on the whole body should come to mind, in cosmetic terms, it is generally the skin aging on the face that is mentioned. Aging is a process that progresses differently in each person depending on genetic characteristics, environment and lifestyle. Like all organs in the human body, the skin ages over time. The difference is that this process can only be seen in the skin. In addition to being the largest organ of the body, the skin is also considered the body’s window to the outside. And the earliest signs of aging also show themselves in the skin.
Similar to other organs in the body, the skin also undergoes serious changes as a result of time, hormonal changes and nutritional differences. In addition, unlike many organs, it is directly affected by environmental factors, especially UV rays from the sun. As the skin ages, there are decreases in the number of cells, volume and functions of the skin. Skin aging is an extremely complex and irreversible chemical and biological condition, and the speed at which it occurs is different for everyone.
The skin has three different layers known as the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The skin, which basically serves two vital functions; prevents physical, chemical and bacteriological intrusions into the body and prevents water loss. It also controls body temperature through sweat glands. The functions of the skin, which mediates the sense of touch, plays a role in hormone production and social communication, are negatively affected by the aging process.
What is Skin Aging?
Skin aging is considered one of the most important problems affecting both women and men today. As people age, the tissues in their bodies also age and undergo some changes. The most striking of these are the changes that occur in the skin due to aging. Although it is not possible to stop aging or completely prevent skin problems that develop due to aging, it is possible to control the symptoms that occur.
Skin aging is a process that affects both the function and appearance of the skin due to structural and molecular deterioration. This process is shaped by internal and external factors. Skin aging is divided into two as chronological aging (internal aging), which occurs over time, and photoaging (external aging), which occurs due to negative environmental factors such as exposure to the harmful rays of the sun, inadequate nutrition, irregular sleep, excessive alcohol and cigarette consumption. More than 90% of the changes seen in the skin are caused by environmental factors caused by chronic sun damage. For this reason, external aging is also called photoaging or aging due to sun rays.
Skin aging is a complex biological event that inevitably occurs over time, and the most noticeable changes in the skin with aging are dryness, loss of normal elasticity, and fine and deep wrinkles.
Who is Suitable for Skin Aging?
Although genetic predisposition is an important factor in skin aging, factors such as exposure to sunlight, smoking, alcohol, makeup, and irregular nutrition are the reasons that accelerate skin aging. Although the skin constantly renews itself and repairs the effects of aging, the repair process in the cells begins to slow down with age. Collagen production in the skin decreases, and the elastic fibers in the connective tissue that form the support layer of the skin are lost. As a result, signs of aging such as skin loosening, wrinkles, sun spots, and skin thinning occur.
Today, maintaining or regaining a youthful appearance is extremely important for many people. The effective way to combat skin aging, which occurs due to time and external factors, is to cleanse, moisturize, and protect the skin from the sun with products suitable for the skin type. There are many different treatment approaches to combat skin aging, and skin aging treatment can be applied to anyone who wants to eliminate or alleviate the effects of aging on their skin.
Why Does Skin Aging Happen?
Although aging is a process of gradual deterioration of tissues in the body by natural means, it is directly related to the person’s genetic structure. Skin aging can be classified in two ways as chronological aging and photoaging. In the case of photoaging; premature aging signs begin to appear in the skin that is constantly exposed to artificial rays or ultraviolet sun rays.
Dirt in the atmosphere weakens the protective hydrolipidic layer of the skin and creates free radicals with high oxidation power. Thus, it accelerates the aging of the skin.
An unhealthy lifestyle resulting from factors such as smoking, alcohol, stress, and irregular nutrition is one of the most important reasons for the skin to lose its radiance and vitality. Stress and fatigue cause wrinkles and lines on the skin due to the tension it creates in the muscles. Overwork or an inadequate nutrition program allows cells to feed themselves using the dermis reserves, and there is a decrease in the basic elements of the skin.
The first signs of aging show themselves as fine lines, loss of radiance and elasticity. These symptoms occur due to the slowing down of the metabolism of skin cells and the repeated attacks of free radicals, especially triggered by exposure to UV rays. Then the lines deepen and the skin loses its firmness. These symptoms are due to the decrease in hyaluronic acid and collagen fibers, which are the basic substances for the dermis.
Then the skin loses its density and vitality. Over time, the synthesis of the basic components of the skin also slows down. While the main substances that support the skin, such as collagen and hyaluronic acid, decrease, the skin structure loses its density and begins to sag. As the skin type turns dry, the natural synthesis of skin lipids also decreases.
What is the Importance of Skin Aging Treatment?
Although it is not possible to slow down time and stop aging, once the symptoms of skin aging begin to appear, these symptoms can be controlled with the right methods. At the same time, it is also possible to prevent or delay symptoms that have not yet appeared. However, it should not be ignored that the precautions to be taken and the methods to be applied for each skin aging symptom should be different.
How is Skin Aging Treatment Performed?
In order to combat the symptoms of skin aging and prevent the emergence of new symptoms, methods such as Botox, dermal fillers, chemical peeling, PRP, mesolifting, laser, radiofrequency can be applied alone or in combination. When determining the method to be applied, the person’s expectations and skin structure are taken into consideration.
Since the face is the area that reflects the aging and wear process the most, facial rejuvenation procedures have an important place in the treatment of skin aging. Static and dynamic wrinkles form on the face as a result of changes in bone, fat, muscle and skin tissue. Dynamic wrinkles increase from the age of 20 due to the contraction of mimic muscles. The most obvious dynamic wrinkles that can turn into static wrinkles over time are known as lines between the eyebrows, on the forehead and crow’s feet. Static wrinkles are wrinkles that are seen when the face is at rest and can become more pronounced with facial expressions depending on where they are located. The most common static wrinkles are the smile lines around the mouth and the wrinkles on the lower eyelid.
The Botox method is one of the most popular methods used to combat dynamic wrinkles that occur especially on the face. Although its effect period varies from person to person, it usually lasts between 3-6 months. In this method, a substance is released from the nerve endings and the movement of the muscle affected by the relevant nerve is stopped.
Dermal fillers are applied to flatten the stars, determine the irregular and loose lines, correct wrinkles and folds, and give the skin a renewed appearance. Depending on the problem in the person, the skin is plumped using different fillers and a smooth and moist appearance is given.
In the chemical peeling method, one or more chemical agents are applied to the skin to create controlled damage at different depths. Then, the aim is to create a renewed healthy skin during the recovery period. Chemical peeling is determined according to the skin color, type, application purpose and depth. Superficial peeling generally renews the upper skin layer and eliminates upper skin originating spots.
In the PRP method, a small amount of blood taken from the person is separated into its components by undergoing some processes. The small amount of platelet-enriched plasma obtained as a result of these special processes is injected into the person for the purpose of rejuvenating the skin. The PRP method can be used in the treatment of scars, wrinkles, spots and hair loss.
Mesolifting is a method in which mixtures of substances such as antioxidants, vitamins and hyaluronic acid are injected into the middle layer of the skin. In this way, the production of collagen and elastin in the skin is increased and the skin is renewed.
In the laser method, the skin is scanned with laser beams. The collagen production in the region is increased by the conversion of laser beams into heat. And new connective tissue formation is provided. Thus, the skin is given a lively and tight appearance.
