Sweating is considered a very serious problem that affects both a person’s business and private life and even causes their self-confidence to decrease. People who have excessive sweating problems face different problems such as not being able to move comfortably in society, not being able to choose the clothes they want, not being able to shake people’s hands, not being able to wear the shoes they want comfortably. Such problems not only cause a decrease in the person’s quality of life but also negatively affect their psychology.
Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, can be defined as the increase in sweat released to the skin surface as a result of the sweat glands working more than normal. Excessive sweating, which occurs especially in the palms, armpits and soles of the feet, is one of the problems faced by both men and women.
Although excessive sweating can cause serious problems for individuals, it is known that treatment options are quite limited. Alternatives such as creams, powders or sprays, which are preferred for treatment purposes, do not have the ability to completely stop sweating and can only provide a short-term delay. The Botox method, on the other hand, is a very effective and long-lasting treatment against excessive sweating.
Sweating is considered a physiological event necessary for the control of body temperature and fluid-electrolyte balance. People who experience excessive sweating beyond physiological sweating may experience this problem all over their body or in certain areas. Since there may be many different causes of excessive sweating, the underlying cause should be investigated first before applying treatment. There are sweat glands all over the body and when the need to sweat arises, heat balance can be provided from anywhere. Excessive sweating is treated only in areas where sweating occurs at a level that will negatively affect social life.
What is Sweating Botox?
The elimination of excessive sweating with Botox injections is known as sweating botox. Botulinum toxin, or botox, prevents the release of the substance that stimulates the sweat glands, especially from the nerve endings, thus stopping sweating. Botox treatment has been used for more than 20 years as an extremely effective method in the treatment of excessive sweating. Sweating Botox aims to stop sweating in areas such as the soles of the feet, palms and armpits, which are the areas that people complain about the most and cause a decrease in their quality of life. The effect of the Botox procedure occurs within 5 to 7 days following the injections.
The sweat glands in the hands are located within the skin and Botox is very effective in reducing the activity of active sweat glands. In order to eliminate this problem, intradermal Botox injections are made intermittently from the fingertips to the palm area and the wrist.
In the Botox treatment applied for underarm sweating, the injection is made into the skin, not into the muscle tissue, unlike the Botox injection made for cosmetic purposes. The swellings that occur after the procedure disappear on their own within a few hours.
There are many sweat glands on the soles of the feet, as in the palms, and the activity of the sweat glands can be reduced with the Botox procedure.
How is Sweating Botox Applied?
As in Botox procedures applied for cosmetic and other medical purposes, sweating Botox is applied with small, fine-tipped syringes specially manufactured for Botox application. Botox injection for excessive sweating treatment is applied into the skin layer and aims to block the sweat gland muscles that contain sweat in the skin and squirt it towards the surface. Thus, it is possible to have a direct effect on the skin layer where the problem occurs.
A slight pain and burning sensation may occur during the application. In order to prevent this situation, local anesthetic cream and ice can be applied before the application. Although local anesthetic creams reduce the pain that occurs when the needle passes through the skin when left in the application area for a long time, it is not possible to eliminate the burning sensation when the drug is injected.
Before Botox application, an iodine-starch test can be performed on the areas where the patient complains of excessive sweating and the active areas causing excessive sweating can be determined. More successful results can be obtained if high-dose injections are made to these areas.
Botox application is done in approximately 30 minutes. Since applications made to the palms and soles of the feet may be a bit more painful than applications made to the armpits, short-term anesthesia may be required.
In the first 4-6 hours after Botox application, perfumes and deodorants containing chemicals should not be used and heavy exercises should be avoided. On the day of the application, pressure massage should not be applied to the areas where the injection is made and hot water showers should be avoided. In addition, aspirin and its derivatives should not be used on the day of the Botox application as they may increase the risk of bleeding.
Who is Suitable for Sweating Botox?
Sweating Botox is a procedure that can be applied to almost everyone between the ages of 18-65. However;
-Those who are pregnant and breastfeeding,
-Those with muscle diseases such as Myasthenia Gravis,
-Those with infections in the application area,
-Those with rheumatoid arthritis using Penicillamine and those using aminoglycoside type antibiotics,
Those using antimalarials such as Chloroquine and drugs that weaken the immune system such as Cycosporin, sweating Botox is not applied.
Why is Sweating Botox Performed?
Sweating Botox is applied for the purpose of eliminating the problem of excessive sweating. Sweating areas on the body are areas where sweat glands are densely populated, and can be listed as feet, palms and armpits. Although in some cases, intense sweating can be seen in different areas outside these areas, Botox is not a solution for their treatment. Botox is a more effective treatment method in areas where sweat glands are densely populated.
There are sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems in the human body. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for the sweating stimulus sent to the sweat glands. Since Botox injection blocks this transmission, sweat does not secrete in those sweat glands during the effect period and the problem of excessive sweating is resolved.
How Long Does the Effect of Sweating Botox Last?
The botox method applied for the treatment of excessive sweating starts to show its effect within 5-7 days. It is effective for approximately 4-6 months. Although the effect period can be extended up to 9 months with continued applications, these periods may vary from person to person.
Botox is an effective but not permanent solution for excessive sweating. As the active ingredient used in the Botox procedure begins to lose its function, a gradual return to the pre-application state occurs. For this reason, Botox application should be renewed at certain intervals.
